Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike is backing Redlands Special Olympics fundraising efforts and has joined with Chair David Cowley to support local athletes as they prepare for the 2026 National Games in Melbourne, marking a significant milestone for the organisation.
This year, Special Olympics Australia proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary. This occasion signifies five decades of breaking barriers, building inclusive communities, and creating opportunities for people with intellectual disability and autism to thrive through sport.
“The impact Special Olympics has had over 50 years is life changing to so many,” Mr Pike said. “It’s about championing sport to transform lives, fostering confidence, connection and inclusion, both on and off the field.”
Since 1976, Special Olympics Australia has grown into a nationwide movement supporting thousands of athletes, coaches, volunteers and families and the Redlands Branch is one of the biggest in the country.
The Redlands community is playing its part in supporting the journey of local athletes to compete in the National Games, with a special fundraising luncheon to be held on Friday 19 June 2026 at Barcella Restaurant in Victoria Point. The event will raise vital funds for the Redlands Special Olympics team as they prepare for Melbourne.
“This event is a fantastic example of our community coming together to back these incredible athletes,” Mr Pike said. “Every ticket sold directly contributes to helping local competitors represent the Redlands on the national stage.”
The luncheon will feature a two-course meal, entertainment from The Ironing Maidens, guest speakers, raffles and more, with $30 from every ticket supporting Redlands Special Olympics.
David Cowley, Chair of Special Olympics Redlands Branch said the support of local communities is essential to the success of athletes.
“The National Games are not just a competition, they are all about courage, connection and community shining a light on the power of inclusion,” Mr Cowley said. “Events like the Games are a reminder of what’s possible when we come together and support each other.”
Tickets for the fundraising luncheon are available until 17 June and are available via the Trybooking link https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1569479
“There is no better way to celebrate 50 years of Special Olympics Australia, than by backing the next generation of athletes right here in the Redlands,” Mr Pike said.
