Major Win for Thorneside and Northern Redlands

The Federal Member for Bowman, Henry Pike, has welcomed a major win for the Thorneside and Northern Redlands community. Airservices Australia have announced that they will not proceed with the proposed Option 1.3 nighttime flight path, known as the “Turn over Moreton Bay,” in its current form.

Mr Pike stated the outcome was a direct result of strong, persistent, and coordinated advocacy from the Redlands community.

“Redlanders spoke up loudly and clearly, and this decision proves that when our community stands together, we get results,” Mr Pike said.

The proposed Option 1.3 flight path was intended to shift aircraft over water as soon as possible, however the final assessments of the flight path exposed significant flaws. The design would have concentrated noise directly over Thorneside and nearby suburbs, which already endure impacts from southbound departures.

“This proposal simply wasn’t fair to our community,” Mr Pike said. “Noise must be shared equitably, and Redlands residents were right to push back against a design that would have left them worse off.”

Community advocacy was central to this outcome including a petition of more than 1,000 local signatures, over 20 formal submissions from Thorneside and surrounding areas and extensive community feedback provided during consultations.

Mr Pike said the strong engagement demonstrated the determination of Redlanders to protect their lifestyle and hold decision makers accountable.

“Redlands will not be a dumping ground for Brisbane’s aircraft noise problems. This decision proves that our community’s voice matters.”

Airservices Australia must now return with new options as part of the next stages (Packages 3 and 4) of the Noise Action Plan.

Mr Pike urged residents to stay engaged as the process continues.

“While this is an important win, the fight is far from over. We must remain vigilant to ensure that Redland City does not end up worse off from decisions made to benefit other communities.”

“I want to thank everyone who showed up, spoke up, and stood up for our community. Together, we will keep fighting for a fair outcome for the Redlands” said Mr Pike.
